In Hirschsprung disease, the nerve cells that move stool along are missing from the lower bowel. Newborns may not pass meconium in the first day, have a swollen abdomen, or vomiting. Older infants may have stubborn constipation. Diagnosis is confirmed by a rectal biopsy.
Treatment is an operation (a pull-through) to remove the affected segment and join healthy bowel to the anus. Most children do well afterwards.

इस रोग में आंत के निचले हिस्से में मल को आगे बढ़ाने वाली तंत्रिका-कोशिकाएँ नहीं होतीं। नवजात पहले दिन मेकोनियम नहीं करता, पेट फूल जाता है या उल्टी होती है। बड़े शिशुओं में ज़िद्दी कब्ज़ रहती है। पुष्टि रेक्टल बायोप्सी से होती है। इलाज एक ऑपरेशन (पुल-थ्रू) है जिसमें प्रभावित हिस्सा हटाकर स्वस्थ आंत को गुदा से जोड़ा जाता है।
